How Twitter Can Improve Your Listening Skills

Many of our clients have asked if and how Twitter could be of any help to them and their business. To the naked eye, Twitter just seems like random people posting random things about their random life that doesn't mean anything to anyone. But, if you dig a bit deeper, you'll start to learn that Twitter is a great way to LISTEN. If Facebook is a social network, than Twitter is a social tool.

You have the ability to see what millions of people, all over the world, are saying about a certain topic. Wanna know how people feel about the Casey Anthony trial? Check Twitter. Interested to see if people are liking the new Captain America movie? Check Twitter. Maybe McDonald's started selling a new McBacon sandwich today and they want to know if people like it. BELIEVE ME, McDonald's is CHECKING the TWITTER.

I once had a friend that went into a bookstore, we'll call it "Flarnes & Doble", with her pre-teen son. Upon arrival, she saw that they were really pushing the new Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition and the magazines were EVERYWHERE and the large giant cut-outs were EVERYWHERE and it was all a bit overwhelming. She got out her smartphone and wrote a tweet mentioning Flarnes & Doble. It said something like, "Wow, Flarnes & Doble, I love coming here with my son but the giant sexy swimsuit edition everywhere was a bit much this morning". Within minutes Flarnes & Doble corporate and responded to her tweet, apologized, told her she was right, and she looked up to see store employees taking down the display.

So why does Flarnes & Doble care about what one woman with her one child has to say? Because that woman, she has a lot of Twitter followers. And all those Twitter followers just read something bad about Flarnes & Doble. And they need to fix that.

I know many people that have gotten airline hassles solved just by tweeting about them. If you tweet out "Mountain Sky Airlines lost my luggage AGAIN!", you can guarantee that Mountain Sky Airlines is going to try to get you happy enough to tweet something nice about them later.

Our point is this: Twitter can be a major tool for you to listen to what people are saying. People are going to talk about what's going on. They're going to tweet about what they want, what they like, what they are looking for. If you own a business called Baton Rouge Garage Door Company and you see that someone in Baton Rouge has tweeted "Ack! My garage door is not working! What do I do?!?!".... well then guess who gets to come to the rescue?

Your current customers and potential customers are on Twitter. Do you know what they're saying?
