Google brings you search results based on a very tricky and ever-changing algorithm. The goal of Google is to bring you exactly what you're looking for, and bring you the most relevant items at the very top of the list. The search results have gotten more comprehensive. If you type "Coldplay's New Album" into Google, they are going to do more than search for websites that have those words somewhere in the content. If that were the case, you would have years of content that is no longer relevant. Rather than finding websites discussing Coldplay's new album in 2005, X&Y, Google is going to assume that you are referring to their newest album released just last week.
Because of this, Google is constantly changing its algorithm to make sure that they are making your search easier. Their most recent update, as detailed by Tech Crunch, brings you the most recent and the most relevant content into your results.
According to the Tech Crunch article, this new algorithm update will affect 35% of searches.
"Google says that the new algorithm knows that different types of searches have different freshness needs,
and weighs them accordingly. For example, a search for a favorite recipe posted a few years ago may still
be popular enough to rank highly, but searches for an unfolding news story or the latest review of the iPhone 4S should bring the newer, fresher content first, followed by older results."
To put it frankly, Google doesn't like a hermit. They are more likely to rank newer and more current content higher than others. Also, if you're talking about a current event or something that is happening in the moment, you're more likely to turn up in search results. To bring more traffic, talk about what's going on in the world. Don't create content and then not update it for months at a time. Google wants to find fresh, recent information. They'll even post things in their search results that are less than 10 minutes old.
